Love?

New Yorker correspondent Evan Osnos in his book, An Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth and Faith in the new China comments about couples in China hooking up for a first date.

I enjoyed what he told about women in China calling a man without a house, a car or a nest egg a “Triple Without.”

I wonder how long it will be before men in China use the same on women. Or that we use the expression here?

One man told a woman, “I don’t have a car, but I have a bicycle.”

She replied, “I would rather cry in the backseat of a BMW than laugh on the back of a bicycle.”

Maybe not love, but I love it.

If a man has a car, a house and a nest egg is he then a triple with” ?

Making material choices is not the best measure of love but it probably ups the odds of a successful alliance and maybe even love.

Is an empty wallet better than having no wallet ?

Maybe BMW is an acronym and in it lies the answer

The Chinese woman reminds me of the second verse of The Bicycle Built for Two. I remember hearing of a Chinese elder defending arranged marriages by comparing them to putting a pot of cold water on the stove. In time the fire heats up the water. I wonder whether the woman crying in the BMW could allow her heart to feel the warmth of love. I would rather laugh on the bicycle.

I can’t add to that, and I am not.
