Govern and Governed, Which Rather You?

In answer to which, I say “govern.” Then in my first Willa Cather letter from The Selected Letters of Willa Cather, I read what follows and it reminded  me of the child’s eye I once had.

“School begins Monday & I suppose I shall go though I don’t feel boyant over the prospect, I have grown so attached to my work & place in the office & to my little laboratory & dissecting outfit & my stuffed animals it is hard for me to leave them. Then here I am “Miss Cather” & govern, there I am a child & am governed. That makes a difference with frail humanity.”

Does it ever! There were younger moments I liked being governed, but for the most part I preferred governing. Even if my charge was only one, me. In fact, it is my favorite group.

Having just written about nursing homes, my mind wanders there. Did you ever have a time you enjoyed being governed?

I have reached the age where I no longer want to be in charge. It is freeing.
My children (adults) probably do not believe me.

I stand with your children. On the other less flippant hand, I get it. Susan’s mom buying us dinner tonight. I love dependency!

I was a real handful when I was a boy so I don’t think that I ever took much of a shine to being governed. I’ve also had several jobs where I have had to govern and I didn’t enjoy that either, so I guess I’m just a live and let live kind of person.

I am with you. My adult self usually rejects governing. So much for nursing homes.
